School Climate And Culture
Do African American students achieve better in schools with more positive school climate? Which dimensions of school climate improve academic and health outcomes in low-income schools?
Several DNA staff have previously or concurrently work at WestEd, an education-based research agency, with years of direct experience working directly with local schools and school districts, in the areas of school climate, school health services, school-based violence prevention programs, special education services, and health and human development.
We have in-depth knowledge of (1) indicators, methodology and research related to school climate and culture within the context of different school and student characteristics, as well as (2) school climate link with health and juvenile justice. We have managed, merged and analyzed large multilevel datasets to examine student-level, teacher/staff-level, and school-level changes over time. We are intimately familiar with California Healthy Kids Survey, California School Climate survey, Department of Education dataquest, and administrative student information systems managed by school districts (such as CitySpan, Aeries). We have coordinated research papers statewide on the link between health and education, conducted large-scale multi-year evaluations examining educational outcomes of juvenile justice and reentry youth, school-to-prison pipeline, and educational inequities in various counties.
